A 200-amp panel upgrade in Baltimore most often costs about $4,500 to $6,500 for a typical house, once the new panel, grounding, permit, and any service-entrance work are included. A straightforward overhead upgrade sits in the middle of that range. A house that needs a new mast, meter equipment, or a long underground service can run above it.

Those are the ranges we see on Greater Baltimore upgrades. They are a planning number. Panel upgrades and replacement at RCH Electric are priced after we open the panel and look at the service. A diagnostic fee applies for that visit, and you get a written price before we start.

What the price usually covers

A real 200-amp upgrade is more than a new metal box on the wall. On a standard overhead-fed house, the scope usually includes:

  • A new 200-amp panel with enough spaces for the circuits you have, plus room for the next project
  • Breakers, labeling, and testing
  • Grounding and bonding brought up to current code, which on older Baltimore houses often means new ground rods and a proper bond
  • Service-entrance cable, the weatherhead, and an exterior disconnect when the existing gear cannot stay
  • The electrical permit and the inspection
  • Coordination with BGE when the meter or the service size has to change

A straightforward overhead-fed house is the common job inside that range. The moment the utility has to rebuild the mast, or the path from the meter to the panel gets long, the price moves toward the top or past it.

What pushes a Baltimore job up or down

Rowhomes and older single-family houses in the city behave differently from a newer suburban panel in a garage. The items that move the quote are usually visible on the first visit:

What we findHow it affects the price
Service is already 200 amps, and you need a new panel or more breaker spacesLower. This is a panel replacement, not a service upgrade.
60-amp or 100-amp service going to 200 ampsThe common Baltimore project, usually inside the $4,500 to $6,500 band.
Mast, weatherhead, or meter equipment has to be rebuiltAdds labor and material, and it puts BGE on the schedule.
Underground service, or a long path from the meter to the panelMore trenching or cable, so the quote climbs.
Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or a rusted fuse boxThe panel has to come out. The service size still decides whether this is a swap or a full upgrade.
Knob-and-tube or damaged wiring on the circuits we touchThat is a rewiring conversation, priced separately from the panel.
Finished basement, a panel buried in a closet, or no clear path for the new cableAccess costs time. Historic rowhouses are the usual case.

Permits are part of the job in Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Howard County, and Anne Arundel County. The fee itself is small next to the labor. What matters is that the work is inspected, so the next buyer, insurer, or lender is looking at a passed job.

200 amps is the right size for most of these houses

A 200-amp service covers a normal Baltimore home: kitchen, dryer, central air, and the electronics a house collects over time. It is also the size we recommend before a home EV charger or a whole-house generator. A 400-amp service is for a large house or a property with several heavy loads at once. If you are comparing the two because a salesperson led with 400 amps, start with a load calculation. We will tell you if 200 is enough.

Adding a generator later is cheaper if the panel can accept the transfer switch now. If you are pricing both, read what a whole-house generator costs in Maryland and we can quote them together.

When the panel is only part of the problem

A warm panel, a buzzing breaker, or a brand an insurer has flagged is a reason to replace the equipment even when the amperage is already adequate. Federal Pacific and older fuse boxes show up constantly in Baltimore housing stock. Replacing them is one of the most common calls we take, and it is often required before a sale or a refinance will move.

If the wiring behind the panel is knob-and-tube, cloth-covered, or simply too damaged to land on a new breaker, the honest quote includes that repair. A home electrical inspection is the right first step when you are buying, selling, or trying to learn whether the panel is the whole story.

How to get a number for your house

Pictures of the panel door help us tell you whether a visit is worth scheduling. They do not replace the visit. We need to see the service entrance, the grounding, the breaker spaces, and whether the utility has to be involved. After that, the price is in writing.

If you want that visit, start with panel upgrades and replacement or call RCH Electric at (443) 423-9876. We cover Baltimore City and the surrounding counties, including the Pikesville and Towson neighborhoods these photos come from.
